When we found out we were expecting our fifth child, we realized that we'd have to do a little room shuffling in our home to comfortably accommodate our growing family .  After giving it some thought, we came up with a game plan.  The boys would share a room (my husband's former home office) and we would convert my son's old room into the new baby's nursery.

Of course, over the summer I became so busy with work and family activities that not much was done in the nursery at all.  By the time we were finally ready to work on the space, Zaria was born.  Fast forward a few months...Time is flying by so quickly. Zaria has just turned 3 months old (already!). So I figured "What better time than now to tackle completing her nursery?"

I knew I wanted to create a cozy, vintage-meets-modern feel with just a hint of global chic. However, I also knew that with our budget and my super busy schedule, a major redesign was way out of the question.  This room redesign would have to be completed without painting the walls or adding expensive furniture. I often tell clients that:

"One of the easiest ways to update the look of a room is to use an area rug.  Area rugs can add texture, color or pattern to the space."

I decided  to take my own advice and use a rug as the starting point of the nursery design.  I needed a rug that would not only hold up to Zaria's first steps and her siblings' horseplay but would also work well with style of our home's decor. I went straight to my go-to online resource for rugs - Rugs USA.  They have an amazing selection of stylish affordable rugs!  After scrolling through their site, I fell in love with the Oriental Weavers Kaleidoscope rug.  It's bold dramatic color and vintage yet modern design were the perfect foundation for the nursery's new look! The vibrant color of the rug makes a big impact and brightened up Zaria's room instantly. Although the rug mainly features a bold berry color, I love that it also has accents of navy, tangerine and turquoise.

I received the rug in the 6x9 rug and was pleasantly surprised with how quickly and well packed it arrived.  I couldn't wait to take it out of it's packaging and test it out underfoot!

The rug is really soft underfoot and will be perfect for when Zaria starts to crawl. The quality, pattern, color and vintage design make it a great choice for high traffic areas too. We're putting the finishing touches on the space now so a full reveal of the nursery will be posted here soon.

I'm really happy with my rug selection and would love for you to check out Rugs USA to get started on your very own room revamp.  Rugs USA is offering my readers a chance to win a $200 gift card good towards any Rugs USA purchase!!   There are so many fabulous rugs to choose from on their website.  I know you'll find something you love. Happy Monday everyone! I spent this past weekend organizing and making a few decorating decisions around my own home. Bright and early Saturday morning, I began purging some of the kids' old clothes and toys.  Next, it was on to the nursery where I completed a few DIY projects I had started before Zaria was born.  You'd be surprised just how much of an impact the small changes I made in Zaria's nursery have had on the look and feel of the room. (I'll be sharing a few photos of her room later this week).  All of this weekend decorating got me to thinking about a decor tip I often share with my clients:

"Transforming a space doesn't always require major renovations." Sometimes all that's needed  is a quick and simple change to create a big impact in your home.

Here are 5 quick and easy ways to update your own space:
  1. Paint - The transformative power of a fresh coat of paint is no secret.  Paint can be used to revamp walls as well as furniture.

Try a using a fun color like emerald green to breathe new life into a piece of old furniture as seen in the photo below.
  2. Create your own statement wall with a gallery wall art installation.

Select cherished photos and mementos to create a curated gallery wall display.
  3.  Incorporate an area rug to add texture, color and pattern.

One of the easiest ways to change the look of a space is to add an area rug. Look how much color and personsonality is added to this space by just layering the bold colored rug on top of the natural rug.
  4. Update your layout- Experiment with the room's layout by rearranging your furniture.

In this photo simply repositioning the bed did wonders for the space and makes the room so much more inviting.
  5. Use textile (like pillows or curtains) to introduce a new color palette or add a fun element of surprise to you room's decor.

New toss pillows on a sofa or a bold window treatment are easy ways to change the look of your room.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I recently shared a quick peek of my dining room and received lots of compliments on how great this corner of the room looks. In addition to the kudos and compliments,  people also seemed to want to know "where do you stash all the clutter that comes with living in a household with 5 children?"  To be honest, the dining room doesn't always look this spotless (gasp!), but using clever storage tricks makes it quite simple to take the room from clutter to classic chic in minutes.

Here's a picture of the other side of the dining room which features a wooden chest of drawers I scored at HomeGoods several years ago.  Because our house is over 90 years old I went with a more traditional design for the main areas of the house (ie kitchen, living room and dining room) but added interesting touches along the way (like the cheetah print pillows seen here).  Yes, it's a pretty room, but it's also quite practical.

So where do I stash the clutter?  Here's a quick breakdown of the smart and unexpected storage solutions that make this area the room's best kept secret:

As you can see, thinking outside of the box is key when setting up a multifunctional space.  My favorite pieces in the room are my lacquered jewelry box and the vinyl upholstered chairs (completely wipeable and super easy to clean).
